Can A Team Day Boost Company Performance?

 

‚ÄčThe Cunninghams were a close-knit family from the 1970’s classic, Happy Days.

As individuals they were unique and each had a role to play, particularly our favourite honorary family member, ‘The Fonz’. And, by working as a unit they overcame their challenges in a highly entertaining and memorable manner.

We recently held a Team Development Day.

It helped us uncover what makes each of us unique, and honed our teamwork skills.

An individual’s contribution as part of a team is as important as the team itself. Each person works together to drive positive organisational culture and business results.

Our team development day offered an opportunity for our new (and not so new!) team members to connect, shape and deliver on future goals and objectives.
 

Why a Team Development Day?


A Team Development Day provides an opportunity to:

  • Bring team members together from multiple locations (particuarly when working with a distributed team like ours) to generate ideas and plans for execution

  • Provide an update on organisational performance and business direction

  • Identify roles and responsibilities for ownership of goals and objectives

  • Maintain the team’s focus on solutions not issues

  • Drive motivation and energise team members

  • Create building blocks for a high-performing team

  • Undertake team building activities to improve communication and negotiation skills

  • Enhance training on procedures and new systems
     

How to Get Started?

Ideally, an off-site venue is recommended to remove the team from their usual working environment - unless you already have access to a spacious and creative area - and to help them gain a fresh perspective in a trusting environment with no interruptions.

In addition, it may be useful to consider the following:

  • Input from key stakeholders in preparation for the agenda and team-building activities

  • Planning for the day with key objectives in mind with adequate break-out sessions (small and large working groups) to maintain the momentum

  • An introductory session that includes a warm-up exercise to get to know the individual members and the contribution they make to the team

  • Rules of engagement established at the onset for smooth running and transition between agenda items

  • A follow-up session can be included as part of the overall programme. This provides an opportunity to identify progress and monitor any obstacles in the implementation of the team action plan
     

Measures of Success

Once your team day is complete, it’s important to take stock and review the results - was it a success? What needs to be done differently, or what lessons did you learn that need to be implemented? There is no point discussing great systems and procedures if there is no follow through.

You might like to consider the following measures of success:

  • The level of team productivity and engagement in 30, 60 and 90 days

  • Analysis of the team’s emotional intelligence: are they more or less appreciative of each individual's contribution as part of the unit

  • Tracking how ideas generated on the day lead to sales conversion

  • Personal business growth, result-focus for our clients and team action plans


So the question remains, who gets to play ‘The Fonz’ in Happy Days? The Fonz was originally a minor character whose breakout performance made him a series regular. His individual style and attributes helped to make the TV show one of the most successful of a generation.

However, this success cannot be attributed to this one individual rather the many talented individuals working together with one common vision.
