Apps to Make You More Productive

You’ve got a massive day ahead.

You get in the car, head off to work, and sit in traffic. Your stress at facing a big day increases as the seconds tick by. The line at your favourite coffee shop seems longer than normal.

Then you get to work and things don’t improve.

You spend countless minutes emailing documents back and forth as you try to finalise a draft. You’re late for a meeting and the printer is just SO slow. You have a list a mile long and you spend more time working out what task to tackle first, than actually doing the job.

Today sucks. But, what would you get done if you had just a few extra minutes available to you in your day? Cool. Now what are you going to do to get there?

These apps might just be the answer to finding those few precious moments. Make sure you read to the end - I’ve saved the best for last!

To boost collaboration

Trello

This app lets you collaborate with other on projects in real-time. It is a great productivity tool, and you can also create personal To-Do lists, as well as upload photos and videos as visual imagery to reinforce the point that they need to be done. This is how it is better than a personal notepad – an image of your cat along with ‘Take Sandy to the vet’ works better than the text alone, don’t you think? The best part – it is free!

Platforms supported: iOS and Android

Google Docs
We live in docs. This is a full-featured office suite that is ideal for viewing and editing Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations and drawings. You can also create and password-protect them, plus forward them to others or ‘share’ them, where others can edit them in real-time. You can now access your email on your mobile device, which you carry along with you, view the attachments and reply instantly, without having to get to a PC or laptop first. The cost? It is free.

Platforms supported: iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry

Dropbox
If there are files on your Mac/PC that you intend to access later, you don’t have to carry your laptop or MacBook with you. All you need to do is store them on the cloud, in your ‘Dropbox’, which offers up to 2 GB of free storage. With the free app, you can then access these files on your iPad/iPhone or any mobile device that is connected to the Internet, and save edits/changes. The files can also be accessed from any device, including PCs/desktops/Macs/laptops. You can also share your Dropbox folder with others so that they can view and/or download the files you have worked on.

Platforms supported: iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry

For the little things

TurboScan Free
This is a free app that turns your phone into a scanner. This way, you don’t have to make your way to the scanner and then wait excruciating long minutes as it does its job. TurboScan saves your scans as JPEG or PDF files and you can also forward them to others – or email them to yourself.

Platforms supported: iOS and Android

CamCard
If you have ever attended a convention or a trade fair, you will probably know how difficult it is manually entering the phone numbers and contact information from hundreds of business cards into your own phone or mobile device. CamCard does that for you for free – all you need to do is scan the business card with your phone, and voila, the information is saved!

Platforms supported: iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry

The real winner

Find Me Coffee
This is a free app that boosts your productivity indirectly. There are times when you can’t seem to get anything done and you need coffee to revitalise your brain. Find Me Coffee points you in the direction of the nearest coffee shop – or the nearest ones, to be specific, just in case you can’t do without Starbucks.

Platforms supported: iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry
