Adobe announces ‘End of Life’ for Business Catalyst

 

Overview

  • Adobe will cease hosting sites on the Business Catalyst platform on the 26th March 2020.

  • There is no immediate impact to your website.

  • If you are a Big Blue Digital client, we will call you over the next week to arrange a meeting and review your current site, future goals and possible next steps.
     

End of life announcement for Adobe Business Catalyst

In recent days, we have been made aware that Adobe will be ceasing development of their all-in-one website hosting platform, Business Catalyst, and will stop hosting websites on this platform in 2 years’ time.

To our clients whose websites and/or email services are currently hosted by Adobe Business Catalyst (BC), we would like to reassure you that there is no immediate impact to your website.

We understand that this announcement comes as a surprise. We have been surprised as well. But, with two years to make alternate plans, we believe that there is little cause for anxiety or panic.
 

What you need to know

  • Adobe BC is a platform that hosts websites. It is the technology that drives the site and, for many businesses, also manages business applications, business emails, email marketing, memberships and other features.

  • We have started to call all of our current Adobe BC clients to discuss the potential impacts of this announcement and endeavour to have made contact with everyone before the end of week Friday (6th April).
     

What happens next?

  • Our 110 Adobe BC sites represent widely different businesses - each with a unique story, goals and technical requirements.

  • The first step we are taking is to carefully and methodically audit those 110 sites and meet with their owners to discuss their current site, future goals and possible next steps.

  • We have already started to investigate the best possible option for your site.

  • We will be preparing a series of comparison charts, listing the features of Adobe BC compared to our recommended platforms - including ongoing hosting and service fees - so that you know your options. Our goal is to have this information to you within one month, depending on the scale and complexity of your existing site. Please keep an eye on your email. If you would like to nominate a key contact in this process, please let us know.

  • We have a goal to migrate 50% of our sites before the end of the next 12 months, but we hope to exceed this.
     

What will it cost?

  • At this stage, Adobe BC will not be offering any financial assistance to migrate your site to a new platform.

  • As part of our audit of client sites, and researching the next steps, we are investigating how we package this work to be as cost effective as possible for your business.

  • For many clients this will mean moving to a self-managed environment, where you can reduce administrative and service fees. For others, our solutions research will focus on systems that will make your life easier and your business more efficient. We look forward to working with you every step of the way.

Our take

Like many businesses who deliver website and digital transformation projects, we have been surprised by this announcement.

For the past 4 years we have actively investigated (and in many cases implemented) solutions for our clients outside of Adobe Business Catalyst (Adobe BC).

This is because we take what we call a ‘platform agnostic’ approach. We don’t specialise in one technology: we research and implement the best solution based on our client’s business goals, processes and culture.  

As such, our current client base has a diverse mix of web solutions on a variety of platforms. Our team has breadth of experience, and are already investigating how this change will impact our client’s businesses, looking at new and existing technologies and forming a picture of ‘what’s next’.

For this reason, we are glad to have been given a two year timeframe to help all of our existing Adobe BC clients migrate to bigger and better things. We are confident that we will find great solutions for our clients - whether that be using BigCommerce for ecommerce sites, Kentico Cloud for content delivery, Squarespace for self-managed sites or a completely unique and bespoke digital ecosystem.

Once the initial surprise has subsided, I am sure that we will all come to see this as an opportunity to take bigger strides toward our business goals in the digital world.
